An Expirement: The Black Keys Meet M. Ward

26 05 2010

About a week ago, I purchased The Black Keys new album “Brothers.” What a great record! While listening to the album, it became apparent as to how much talent this duo has. Lyrically speaking, they aren’t at the top of their game, but the music surrounding that definitely picks up the slack.

Later that day, I heard an M. Ward song on 88.1 KDHX and something clicked. I believe it was a track from his latest effort, Hold Time. I soon began to ask myself, what if these two forces met? With Ward’s lyrical prowess and compositional methods combined with the Key’s unique musical aura found in every song, how could this not be a great independent record? This would go beyond Blakroc (described as an experiment, an album the band now claims unsatisfactory). Him and It?

I am going to make a proposition. An experiment, per say. When was the last time that a fan suggested a collaboration album that was actually made? Far and few between. I will make an attempt to give the fans a word in the creative process. This is something all fans wish they had at some point in their tenure as a follower of an act. As experimental as both groups are, they should welcome such a challenge to work with each other. If we gain enough votes, digital and social recognition, then there could be a chance that this “album” could peak interest from both camps. Give the people what they want!
